Alaska is like not other place on the globe

Here there are 586,000 square miles of wilderness and civilization mixed. Alaska is from 2 - 3000 miles from Washington D.C., depending on which part of Alaska one considers. More critical is that Alaska is a developing country, not an over-developed and polluted nation of 250 million people. Alaska is nothing short of a seldom-traveled paradise for off-roaders. It is the dream that's just out of reach, just a little too far to travel for most off-road trips from the continental U.S.

Alaska is home to one of the most active plate boundaries on the planet, where the Pacific Plate is being forced under (or subducting under) the North American Plate at rates greater than 7 cm/year (just under 3 inches/year). Though this process forms much of the magnificent mountain ranges and peaks in Alaska. Alaska is very large with numerous logistical and economic constraints on access. Locations used by large numbers of some species are ephemeral and impossible to predict. Alaska is also an ethnically diverse state that has 229 federally recognized tribes and 119,241 Alaska Native residents according to the 2000 US Census. Census data also indicate as many as 55,000 women in Alaska between the ages of 18 and 64 may be at or below 250% of the poverty level and nearly 30,000 in this age range are without any type of health insurance.

Alaska is the largest state with over 656,400 square miles. It is approximately 2000 miles from east to west. Alaska is twice the size of Texas, one fifth the size of the entire contiguous United States, and has more than 31,383 miles of coastline. Off shore of Alaska's coastline are some of the richest fishing grounds in the world.

Vast glaciers occur in the mountains northwest of Juneau. A piedmont glacier occurs at the foot of a mountain range and consists of a large number of valley glaciers that coalesce. Vast areas of interior and northern Alaska are reached by air, and may be supplied by summer sea shipments. The high cost of air travel and supplies shipped by air has dramatic impacts on the cost of living.

Bears, deer, elk, moose, and whales also live there. Fishing, mining, oil, and timber are the state's main resources. Bears are curious, intelligent and potentially dangerous animals, but undue fear of bears can endanger both bears and people. Many bears are killed each year by people who are afraid of them.

Anchorage is home to roughly forty percent of the human population in Alaska as bears, moose and so forth seem to prefer other areas. If you're flying in to Alaska, Anchorage is going to be your destination. Anchorage emits a warm glow wherever you look as homes, businesses and city streets are lit up in a festive mood. You can never claim we are of the dull sort.
